This course examines the associate degree study of medical-surgical nursing, with an emphasis on comprehensive care management, leadership, and pharmacological interventions for patients with complex health deviations. Topics include cardiac, respiratory, oncological, neurological, visual, auditory, and peripheral vascular disorders, as well as end-of-life care, professional standards, and ethical and legal responsibilities in nursing. Students will develop skills in the nursing process, pharmacology, implementing evidence-based interventions, and promoting health maintenance and patient-centered care. Ethical considerations in decision-making, patient advocacy, and navigating legal issues will also be explored. The associated clinical components include hands-on experience in acute medical-surgical care settings, a preceptorship in leadership and management, and clinical simulation exercises focused on course content, fostering real-world readiness, safe medication administration, and compassionate care.
Course Learning Outcomes 1. Utilize the steps of the nursing process, including assessment, establishing goals, planning interventions, and evaluating said interventions with patients diagnosed with medical-surgical disorders involving cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, neurological-sensory, and oncological health problems.
2. Collaborate with the inter-professional team to provide leadership in the management of care for medical-surgical patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, neurological-sensory, and oncological health problems.
3. Educate the family and patient regarding available resources for the care and management of medical surgical patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, neurological-sensory, and oncological health problems.
4. Implement nursing interventions to help patients and families cope with the psychosocial impact of cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, neurological-sensory, and oncological health problems.
5. Create an evidence based plan of care for patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, neurological-sensory, and oncological health problems.
6. Develop competence with current technology to facilitate confidential clinical documentations
