CRJ 133 - Constitutional Criminal Procedure

Explore the U.S. Constitution. Principles of constitutional law emphasized through a study of the Bill of Rights, the 14th Amendment, U.S. Supreme Court cases, and court decisions regarding equal protection of the laws, due process, legal rights of the accused, and other aspects of criminal and juvenile justice.



Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will explain the concept of due process, where those rights come from and how they are protected and applied to the defendant in a criminal proceeding.

2. Students will explain basic procedures within the criminal process including pretrial activities, adjudication, plea bargaining, post-conviction activities, and the appellate process.

3. Students will demonstrate their understanding of probable cause and why it is necessary to obtain warrants, make arrests, and file criminal charges.

4. Students will explain the roles and responsibilities of the actors in the criminal court process including, but not limited to, the judge, grand jury, prosecutor, defense counsel, and trial jury. 

5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of sentencing including goals, appropriate sentencing, and Constitutional rights of the defendant during sentencing.
