Designed to furnish students in Criminal Justice and Prelaw a concise yet comprehensive introduction to American criminal law, and provide an appropriate reference for the criminal justice professional who needs to understand the legal environment in which he/she functions.



Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will explain the differences between criminal and civil law.

2. Students will identify the criminal elements of various crimes against persons, property, order, and state.

3. Students will define, recognize, and apply probable cause.

4. Students will recognize important considerations and case law dealing with the rights of criminal defendants.

5. Students will summarize the sources and historical evolution of criminal law doctrines and principles.
