CRJ 101 - Ethics in Criminal Justice

A straightforward presentation of the major ethical systems followed by a discussion of moral development and the ideal of justice. Information will be provided to enable students to solve complex moral dilemmas within the complicated criminal justice system.



Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will understand the importance of Criminal Justice ethics by:
a. students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of justice.
b. students will demonstrate an understanding of basic ethical theories and their application to criminal justice practice.
c. students will identify ethical issues commonly occurring during criminal justice operations.
d. students will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and reasoning to resolving common ethical dilemmas encountered in criminal justice practice.

2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the complex process of moral and ethical decision-making when enforcing laws and processing offenders.

3. Students will demonstrate the acquisition of a fundamental framework of analytical skills when examining ethical situations in the criminal justice system.

4. Students will demonstrate insight into how decision-making impacts not only offenders but also the victims and society.

5. Students will examine their personal attitudes, values, and beliefs in relation to the crime, the offender, the victim, and the justice system.
