HSC 214 - Safety & Infection Control for the Laboratory

Focus on scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection control with emphasis on the characteristics of microorganisms, production and transmission of disease, and occupational safety hazards and biohazardous waste. Includes methods and practical application of infection control and barrier precautions for both laboratory and clinical proficiency, a comprehensive understanding of safety data sheets, and the importance of control requirements in the laboratory. 



Course Learning Outcomes
1. Identify methods of controlling the growth of microorganisms. 

2. Understand the principles of standard precautions.

3. Identify the implications for failure to comply with Centers for Disease Control regulations in a laboratory setting. 

4. Demonstrate the proper handwashing technique, sterilizing procedures, autoclaving procedures, and proper disposal of biohazardous material. 

5. Define disinfection, sanitization, and sterilization.
