ESP 220 - Esports Industry Trends

Examine popular culture both inside and outside of the competitive gaming industry. Students will gain an understanding of how trends evolve and transform within the gaming industry by analyzing case studies of successful titles. Students will apply this knowledge to anticipate market changes and adopt new and growing esports titles, technologies, and practices into their careers, with a focus on discussing new and evolving genres and technologies and current events in the gaming industry.



Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify current and developing technologies in the world of gaming.  Examples of this will include: VR, the metaverse, new and current console platforms, upcoming and current development engines, and current versus future gaming hardware.
  2. Articulate major cultural moments within the history of gaming and speak to how they affected digital culture at large, as well as development of specific titles.
  3. Identify significant market changes in gaming history and articulate how changes in payment models affected game creation and development.
