Companion course to SOC 160 Introduction to Social Work. Students completing this class will complete a volunteer field experience in a social service setting of 33-99 hours throughout the semester. The activity is meant to provide a glimpse into the social work profession and social service field. This is a community-based field experience that will allow students the opportunity to work directly with an agency/program and the clients they serve.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Gain a basic understanding of how generalist social work practice is applied in a specific agency setting.
- Experience the organizational structure and function of a social service agency and/or program.
- Experience activities of a worker in the social service field in a setting that allows the student to become involved in many of these activities.
- Develop skills needed in the social service field, including interviewing, record keeping, time management, and reporting skills
