BIO 147 - Genetics Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in BIO 113 STANDARD CREDIT TYPE 4 credit(s)
Introduction to the principles of molecular genetics of plants, animals, and bacteria. Covers methods of transmission, recombination, structure and replication of DNA, gene expression, cloning, and population genetics. Includes laboratory component.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Define and apply the principles of Mendelian Genetics.
- Explain the chromosomal theory of inheritance.
- Describe the molecular basis of heredity.
- Outline the process and applications of DNA fingerprinting.
- Identify the mechanisms involved in transference of genes.
- Discuss the importance of population genetics in evolution.
- Examine the importance of gene therapies, cloning and DNA forensics and the ethical considerations involved in these topics.
- Demonstrate laboratory skills in the area of genetics including sequencing and fingerprinting.
