Survey of the development of American jazz from the late 19th century to the present, with emphasis on its ethnic origins, cities where jazz developed, styles that evolved, and the influential personalities.
Course Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the different styles, ethnic branches, and instruments of jazz over the last 120 years.
2. Recognize the names and stylistic characteristics of the most important figures in jazz history.
3. Explain how and why certain cities became centers for jazz development.
4. Prepare a presentation about the life and music of a specific jazz musician.
5. Explain how jazz has been involved in America’s history, popular culture, and race issues.
