MAT 052 - Pre-Algebra Prerequisites: COMPASS pre-algebra score of 40 or better, NextGen ACCUPLACER arithmetic score of 220 or more, ACT math score of 12 or better, or MAT 040 DEVELOPMENTAL CREDIT TYPE 3 credit(s)
Designed for students with no background in algebra or for students who need a review before proceeding further. Covers topics basic to learning higher mathematics and basic problem-solving techniques using algebraic concepts. Not a transfer course.
Course Learning Outcomes
• Upon completion of this class the students will be able to:
1. Cite and apply mathematical definitions.
a) Identify real numbers (natural numbers, whole numbers, rational, and irrational numbers).
b) Apply to descriptions of rules and properties of real numbers (additions, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents and roots).
2. Cite and apply mathematical rules.
a) Apply the order of operations to correctly evaluate a numerical expression.
b) Simplify expressions involving whole numbers, exponents, radicals, and rational fractions.
c) Solve one variable linear equations and inequalities.
3. Cite and apply mathematical properties.
a) Apply to determining data from graphs of functions, relations, and inequalities.
4. Apply mathematical algorithms/processes.
a) Transform equations and inequalities into equivalent forms.
b) Simplify expressions involving whole numbers, exponents, radicals, and rational fractions.
5. Apply the principles and equations for linear algebra in a verbal context
a) Convert verbal expressions into the appropriate algebraic expression
b) Solve formula problems
c) Solve application problems
