BIO 132 - Animal Care and Rehabilitation

Principles of wild animal maintenance and care, with emphasis on handling and rearing animals and treatment of injuries during rehabilitation. Lecture and lab at “Calkins Campus” Nature Area and work with live animals housed there.



Course Learning Outcomes
1. Define and discuss what wildlife rehabilitation is and the role of the rehabilitater in conservation.
2. Explain the ethics and safety concerns in the field of Wildlife Rehabilitation. 

3. Identify the laws and the organizations that govern wildlife rehabilitation and that help set the standards for care. 

4. Identify the species most commonly treated in wildlife rehabilitation and their key anatomical and physiological differences.
5. Describe the housing, hygiene, nutrition and zoonosis control standards for wildlife kept in captivity
6. Describe the techniques involved in the complete rehabilitation cycle from intake evaluations, rehab exercises, and end stage options.
7. Perform the following: daily fluid and nutrient calculations, physical examinations, wing bandaging, tube feeding placement, and fluid administration.
