A continuation of CHM 263 with emphasis on nomenclature, synthesis, structure and bonding, reaction mechanisms and spectrascopic methods. Topics covered include UV-Vis spectroscopic, aromatic substitution arenes, carbonyls compounds, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines, alcohols, ethers, phenols, physiologically active molecules. Some topics of biochemistry are introduced.



Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain observations and reactions in organic chemistry at a molecular level.
  2. Describe organic molecules using correct structural information and nomenclature.
  3. Identify and characterize organic reactions.
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the structure and function of different classes of biomolecules.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency using various laboratory techniques in organic chemistry.
