This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. The course also prepares students to identify and report suspected child abuse and dependent adult abuse and it is a required course for mandatory reporters.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Understand key changes in basic life support, reflecting the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care

2. Understand critical concepts of high-quality CPR

3. Recognize the American Heart Association Chain of Survival

4. Perform 1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant

5. Perform 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant

6. Understand differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques

7. Perform bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant

8. Perform rescue breathing for adult, child and infant

9. Relieve choking for adult, child and infant

10. Perform CPR with an advanced airway

11. Define child abuse

12. Recognize the indicators of child abuse

13. Discuss the mandatory reporter classifications and responsibilities

14. Describe the State of Iowa Assessment process, reporting procedure, and other legal aspects

15. Identify the causes of child abuse, how to prevent child abuse and how to assist families

16. Define the meaning of dependent adult abuse as defined in the Iowa Code Section 235B.2(5) and 235E

17. Identify the types of dependent adult abuse

18. Describe the physical, psychological, behavioral, environmental, and other relevant indicators of dependent adult abuse

19. Review the requirements and procedures for reporting suspected cases of abuse

20. Review the classifications of mandatory reporters, confidentiality provisions, immunity provisions and penalties for failure to report as described in the Code of Iowa and the Iowa Administrative Code

21. Describe the assessment protocol utilized by the Department of Human Services and other investigating agencies following a receipt of a report and the manner in which information is shared between the Department of Human Services and the reporter, other relevant individuals, agencies and entities

22. Discuss resources that are available related to the causes and risk factors of dependent adult abuse, related to assisting individuals and families who have experienced dependent adult abuse and local referral services, and related to the prevention of dependent adult abuse
