ACM 144 - Zoonosis and Infectious Disease


Prerequisites:
Completion of ACM 110  with a grade of C or higher.

Introduces the basics of disease transmission with particular emphasis on those diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Topics include zoonotic diseases, modes of transmission, symptoms, prevention of transmission between animals and personal protection of animal care technicians through immunization. Upon completion, students should be able to discuss zoonotic diseases, and the animal care technician’s roles and responsibilities related to the control of such diseases.



Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify and describe the major zoonotic diseases that are of concern in working with domestic, exotic and wild animals.
  2. Discuss zoonotic disease transmission in animal care facilities. 
  3. Develop a prevention plan to decrease risk to caretakers, the public and other animals in the facility.
