ENV 145 - Conservation Biology

Explore the patterns and processes influencing biodiversity.  Includes discussion of causes for loss of biodiversity, population genetics, ecology, reserve design and management, and sustainable development. Special consideration to the ethical and political aspects of application of conservation management.  Lab includes ecological and population monitoring techniques and observation of conservation approaches.  



Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Define and differentiate the various forms of biodiversity.
  2. Describe key factors that affect biodiversity and management.
  3. Identify factors that lead to loss of biodiversity, both currently and in past extinction events.
  4. Summarize the principles of threatened and endangered species management.
  5. Explain issues relating to conservation reserve design and management. 
  6. Perform modeling, measurement, and analysis tasks relevant to conservation biology.
