Explores the associate degree study of psychiatric mental health nursing, including mental health concepts, nursing interventions, psychiatric disorders, and nursing of special populations. The associated clinical component includes experiences in acute and outpatient mental health settings. Clinical specialties also include an observational experience in a chemical dependency center.

Course Learning Outcomes

Utilize the steps of the nursing process, including assessment, establishing goals, planning interventions, and evaluating said interventions with patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders
Safe and effective care environment: Collaborate with the inter-professional team to provide leadership in the management of care for psychiatric patients.
Health promotion & maintenance: Educate the family and patient regarding available resources for the care and management of psychiatric disorders, and the medications used for them.
Psychosocial integrity: Implement nursing interventions to help patients and families cope with the psycho-social impact of psychiatric disorders
